Few important things let me evaluate web design profession. There are numerous web developer are working in Lahore. Tens of institutions in Lahore are teaching web development and graphic designing. On the other hand there is a little web development work in Lahore. Computer or IT profession is very saturated due to abundance of IT training institutions in Lahore. Looking all these factors one can easily conclude that web development profession has unpredictable future. One main reason is decreasing web designing prices. Here in Lahore, there are many groups who try to decrease web designing prices by declaring it easy work or easy money. Such groups exist everywhere. It is not true. IT and web development difficulty is hard. You need to learn new technology all the time. I use to teach subjects up to B.Sc. level but al least books were same. I envy such government school, college and university teachers, lecturers and professors who take very high salaries by teaching same books or notes. Some of my lecturers even remember page numbers and answers. They enjoyed their lives and were always found laughing because free government accommodations, free medicines and much more. Although basic experts can make websites but only high level experts can develop quality websites. Web development is very productive for other businesses and considered as one time investment.
Third party IT and web development solution providers like odesk.com, elance.com, freelancer.com and many others have greatly reduced work for web designing companies and senior and experienced freelance web designers. Work distribution has greatly disturbed due to these third party websites. Secondly, these website require joining test which may be good for students but it is unsuitable for experienced developers.

Often I get CV’s of web developers and software engineers asking for job or work. I myself get little work. I will suggest them to go to Europe where plenty of high paid work is available if they learn any language of European countries other than There are tens of thousands of English speaking Web developers in the English speaking countries like USA, Britain, Australia and Canada etc. but still they are very rich countries having enormous resources and wealth. They will continue to adjust immigrants due to their huge potential. Comparing Pakistan with these countries is like comparing any remote village with any metropolis or big city. India had made web development a low paid profession which provides cheapest labor.
Students these days are trying to seek shortcuts by learning practical skills directly from professionals. Many students in Lahore contacted me to learn skills from me. It is like that someone asks an experienced doctor and asks him to teach prescribing medicines without getting any degree. It is very negative trend. These students should first complete their education by taking University degrees. I myself completed my education and took Master degree during the year 1992-93 despite the fact that we studied a book which was probably written in the year 1962. These syllabuses had been taught as it were for tens of years but these graduates proved successful officers in all types of institutions and departments in Pakistan.
Here applies a big rule of demand and supply. Fewer companies are interested in developing website while web developers are many. Many times companies and businessmen in Lahore arrogantly asked me to appear in their office as they are giving me charity. Even rich property dealers asked me to appear in their office if I need work. Often I provided them free demonstration by visiting their office and spending my own money. Later I refused to visit any one’s office unless guaranteed. Here, I will suggest that web developers should not visit offices unless they are ensured work. Doctors never visit anyone’s home or office unless heavily paid in advance. Even small category workers refuse to visit home or office. One businessman told me that many businessmen and other people in Lahore do not believe in the provision of honorable work to web designers. But poverty and lack of work let people accept work on humiliating terms. Here, I emphasize that web developers should get honorable work, which is their right in the constitution and UNO ILO charter.
After years of research and analysis rating agencies found highest earning professions in Pakistan. These professions include medical doctors, paramedical staff and many fields of Engineering. These two professions still have great potential. Especially doctors are needed around the world. Doctors are earning great money in hospitals and clinics. Similarly people relating to finance are earning very high salaries in financial institutions and banks. CA or ACMA accountants earn highest salary in Pakistan. However finance and accounts professions are partially saturated. Freelancers and independent web designers are more affected due to absence of internet based or web design and development work. Currently in the year 2010, agriculturists are getting high profits. Food is short and badly needed in densely populated Pakistan and agriculturists are getting wishful prices. University professors and college lecturers are getting highest grades with highly relaxed jobs. They get maximum holidays and teach few periods a day.
Secondly, web design and development work in Pakistan is very low paid. One can easily understand that freelance web designers cannot survive in such circumstances where there is no work or low paid work. Similarly many international websites which claims to provide work to freelancers are exploiting programmers. They provide bidding type of system and let programmers work free for them. Instead of providing advance payments they put money in escrow. Most of such bidding websites are scam. They rarely pay to programmers. It is obvious that web design and development companies in Pakistan cannot survive.
This situation may exist due to excessive numbers of web designers, web developers, computer, software and IT services. One of the reasons of absence of work for information technology (IT) professionals, computer and software experts, website designers and developers is abundance of non-professional and non-degree holder web designers and developers. After getting nominal traditional education one can easily learn web designing and development from any college or academy in Lahore. Advanced development tools and software have increased unemployment in web developers but there is no alternative to it.
There are many non-professional non-degree holder web designers in Pakistan. People should ensure that they select qualified web developer. These non-professional non-degree holder web designers are like such a dispenser who practice in a clinic without professional degree holder doctor. Only medical doctors enjoy value of their degrees. Non degree holders or so called doctors are not allowed to practice. Similarly non-professional and non-degree holder web designer should not be allowed to make websites.
Website designer’s income is very low. Doctors earn in one day what computer programmers and website designers earn in a month. Even Rickshaw drivers are earning more. One Rickshaw driver told me that he earns 15,000 to 25,000 rupees per month from his Rickshaw. Initial salary of young doctors is 23,000 rupees per month. Government job is an easy task where employees often get salaries for just passing six to eight hours. Some employees take salaries without attending offices regularly.

This third in a series of “Getting Started with Internet Marketing” articles is about pointing your new web host (in article 2) to your new domain that you purchased in article 1. This linking is important because if you don’t do it, you’ll never see your Internet marketing site online. Period. But no problem! We’re going to fix that right now.

A server (or name server or domain name server or DNS) is a computer that translates domain names into IP or Internet protocol addresses. These are expressed in a series of numbers which other servers will understand. It makes things much simpler for us because instead of needing to type in series of numbers we can just type in coolwebsite.com and everything works.

But we have to tell servers where to find our websites, and because you just purchased your domain, you probably still have the registrar’s name server (or nameserver) addresses, and in order for your website to be seen, you’ll have to change them over to your hosting account. This won’t be the case if you’ve purchased a hosting account where you got a free domain or two for perks of joining, but never base your hosting decision on that alone. (See article 2 in the Getting Started with Internet Marketing” series for more buying tips.)

For this exercise, let’s say you’re going to have a separate hosting account. You’ll need to “point” your domain to your host’s name servers so that when someone types in your domain, they’ll land at your web site. So, at your domain registrar’s site, navigate to where the name servers are located. It may just say “DNS.” These are usually located near your domain listing or accessible through a link nearby your domains.

What you’re going to find are two addresses and they’ll look something like this: “ns1.yourregistrar.com” and “ns2.yourregistrar.com.” Both of those addresses will have to be changed. Now, open a new tab or window and go to your hosting account. Look for “name servers,” “nameservers, ” or “DNS.” Because these are sometimes hard to find, you may want to search for one of those terms.

In fact, there is a difference. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It refers to anything you do to your page to make it more search engine friendly. SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing. It forms a sort of umbrella term that can refer to anything you do to get your page ranked higher in search engines, from search engine optimization to requesting backlinks to submitting your URL to search engines.

It’s important to know the difference between the two when you’re shopping for SEO or SEM services. If the company doesn’t specify what services it offers as part of its “SEM Package,” then don’t hesitate to ask. And don’t hand over any money until you know! Some companies may mean nothing more than submitting your website’s URL to a few search engines, and you can do that yourself.

Whenever possible, get a list of specific things they plan to do to help surfers find your website. Will they submit your URL to search engines? Get a list of the search engines they plan to submit it to. (“Yahoo!, Google, and 100′s More!” doesn’t count.) Will they keyword optimize your site? Be sure to ask if they include META and ALT tags.

Ultimately, whether a company uses “SEO” or “SEM” doesn’t matter as much as what services they offer. Ideally, SEM would be more valuable than SEO, because it would include SEO as well as other marketing strategies. But this is not always the case. As we’ve noted before, it can be simply a code for “stick your URL is a few search engines and be done with it.” Look for reputable websites, and ask for specific services they offer. For many casual internet users, the terms SEM and SEO rarely enter their minds when they are busy jumping from one website to another. However, it is these terms that determine much of what comes out on the results page whenever we type in a word in the search tab of any accessible search engine. These terms are also responsible for all those advertisements and pop-ups that link us to even more websites, whether they may be connected to our original search or not. So just what are SEM and SEO?

In the simplest way possible, SEM and SEO are tools which website creators, especially those who are promoting and selling a certain service or product, use in order to gain a lot of exposure and better ranking for their website. Sounds easy enough, right? Well, the simplicity ends there.

To make it a tad bit complex, SEM and SEO are not the same. As suggested by the names, SEM, or Search Engine Marketing, deals more with how a website is marketed to gain exposure in the different search engines available on the internet, while SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, deals with how the web creators develop and re-develop the content, quality and structure of their entire websites so that whenever an internet user types in a particular word in the search tab, their websites have a better chance of appearing on the first few search engine results pages (SERPS).

Now, to make it even more complex, although the functions of SEM and SEO seem different, they are more effective when used together. Since the main function of SEM is to gain more exposure for a website, the more common means for attraction are online advertisements, blogs, internet articles, partner and sponsored websites, and anything that can catch the eye of the internet user. SEM also makes use of PPC (pay-per-click) and paid inclusion to further push a website’s visibility. Lastly, it is also an important process in SEM to submit the name and URL of a website to different search engines and web directories if only to inform them of the website’s existence. All this is carried out to ensure the popularity of a website.

So how does SEO come together with SEM? Well, despite having all the advertisements provided by SEM, it is truly the SEO that allows the internet user to easily and conveniently find what he is looking for. Since the function of SEO is to gain a better ranking in the SERPS, the web creator has to constantly optimize his website in order to cater to the needs of the internet user and to make it easier for spiders or web crawlers to judge whether the website’s content is relevant to the word/s being searched. Optimization is not a simple and easy task. It involves having to restructure the website regularly (by editing the html code and meta tags, changing content, reorganizing the site map, developing an easier navigational structure, etc.) so as to adapt to the rapidly changing demands of the internet user. Still, when done properly, not only does SEO help a website become more useful and therefore, more often visited by the internet user, it also helps gain more exposure since it increases the website’s chances of gaining a better rank in the SERPS.
